Imperial Palace

Innsbruck

The Imperial Palace (German: Kaiserliche Hofburg), originally built by Archduke Sigmund the Rich, is one of the major attractions in Innsbruck. Beside Schönbrunn Palace and the Imperial Palace of Vienna, the Imperial Palace at Innsbruck is one of the three major historic-cultural monuments in Austria. The Palace, known as the Hofburg by locals, is now a world class museum. After extensive restoration work, the Imperial Palace returned to its former 18th century splendour. Giant’s Hall, Guards’ Hall, Lorraine Room and Chapel give visitors a palpable sense of the elegance and wealth of the former Habsburg Dynasty. Especially worth seeing is the Empress Elisabeth Apartment, that was restored to its former splendour as well and now contains mainly 18th century furnishings, tapestries, and works of art which capture the mood of those times. The museum features an intimate view of the lavish lifestyles and extraordinary wealth of these past rulers and reflects the highest standards of the time. Admire the portraits from the Habsburg Dynasty which adorn and decorate the walls of the ornate entry hallway.
