Mountain Bike Ride
Marienbergjoch

This circular ride from Nassereith in the Gurgltal Valley up over the Marienbergjoch ridge, onto the Fernpass and back again is perfect for fit mountain bikers in search of a challenge. With over 1,200 vertical metres of elevation gain, it requires both strong legs and good bike-handling skills. The reward for all that hard work comes in the form of wonderful views of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, to the north as well as the Ötztal and Stubai Alps to the south. A refreshing dip in the Weisensee lake or the beautiful Blindsee lake is the perfect way to soothe tired muscles.

Trail description

In Nassereith, take the municipal road in easterly direction and cycle slightly uphill towards "Dormitz, Rossbach". The path runs along the Rossbach stream until the turn-off "Marienbergjoch, 605". Turn left here and continue on a somewhat steeper tarmac road through the hamlet of Aschland in Obsteig until the turn-off to the Marienbergjoch ridge. Here again turn left and cycle along the forest path (route 605) to the Marienbergalm hut. The forest path now becomes a little bumpier and runs through the ski area to the Marienbergjoch ridge. Then follow a well-maintained forest road somewhat steeper downhill to the Sunnalm. Then the path leads in a few switchback corners down to the top station of the Marienberg cable car. Keep to the left before the Waldhaus Talblick and continue downhill through the forest until you cross the Fernpass road. Now turn left and follow the Fernpass road towards Weißensee. After a few metres turn left again onto route 836 and cycle along the southern shore of the Weissensee lake. The route now climbs slightly, partly over the Via Claudia Augusta, past the Blindsee lake. Directly next to the information board for the "Via Claudia Augusta", turn right towards Nassereith. After about 21 kilometres, carefully cross the busy Fernpassbundesstraße and continue towards "Fernstein, Nassereith". After about 300 metres, turn sharp left onto route 610 towards Nassereith. After 300 metres, turn left again and follow the cycle path "Fernstein, Nassereith" downwards. Now the forest path turns into a singletrack trail, which however is mostly very well passable. Shortly after Fernstein Castle, an asphalt road is reached. This leads straight on, past the camping site, to a narrow underpass leading under the Fernpassbundesstraße. Follow the signs "Nassereith, Via Claudia Augusta". At first follow a forest path and later on follow the road which leads through the centre of Nassereith back to the southern edge of the village.
