Crossing the border to Italy, this spectacular alpine road winds its way from the Ötztal Valley in Tirol up over the 2,478-metre-high Timmelsjoch pass before descending into the province of Alto Adige. The spectacular Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road is a toll road leading through the spectacular glacier landscape of the Ötztal Valley, up over the Austrian-Italian border and back down the other side into Italy's Passeiertal Valley as far as the charming town of Meran/Merano 2,000 vertical metres below. It attracts motorcycle enthusiasts and car drivers alike, not least thanks to the fact that it is less busy than some of the more well-known mountain roads connecting Austria and Italy. Keep your eye out for the futuristic sculptures which can be found dotted across the landscape and which tell the story of the region's nature, history, culture, society and economy.
