Tratzberg Castle

Jenbach

Centuries old yet up-to-date with the digital age, Tratzberg Castle offers visitors the chance to admire its stunning rooms at first hand and as part of a 3D virtual reality tour.

Perched high above the valley floor, Tratzberg Castle lies between the towns of Jenbach and Schwaz. It is first mentioned in documents dating from the 13th century and was originally used to secure the border with neighbouring Bavaria. After falling into ruin, it was rebuilt by the Fugger family of merchants and became a classic example of 16th century Tirolean castles. Today it offers visitors not only traditional guided tours through the most important rooms in the castle, including the Habsburgersaal, the Gothic Fuggerstube and the King's Room but also a 3D virtual reality tour in eight languages. There is also an audio guide which sees former residents of the castle take visitors from room to room, telling them about the history of this magnificent building. Hands-on exhibits include helmets and swords to pick up and even try on.

Special fairytale tours are organised for children (in four languages) and give youngsters a chance to meet the Emperor, the Queen and the castle ghost named "Tratzi". Keep your eyes open for hidden doors! The journey from the valley up to the castle can be completed on foot or using the Tratzberg Express shutle service.
