The fact that the Tirol has become a centre of modern architecture in recent years is largely due to the work of the "aut.architektur und tirol" (formerly the "Architekturforum") which has been organizing exhibitions, lectures, children's workshops and other such programmes since 1993.

Since 2005 the aut has itself been housed in a building steeped in history – the Adambräu brewery in Innsbruck, built by Lois Welzenbacher in 1926/27. This has been sensitively adapted for its new use as an architectural and research centre by architects Rainer Köberl, Thomas Giner, Erich Wucherer and Andreas Pfeifer. In addition to the aut, it also houses the building archive of the University of Innsbruck.
architec(tour) Tirol
In order to obtain a comprehensive survey of the Tirolean building landscape those interested are recommended to undertake one of the five so-called architec(tour)s that the aut has put together in cooperation with the Tirol Tourist Board, the Municipality of Innsbruck and Innsbruck Tourist Office. They can be accessed at
www.aut.cc. Maps and basic information are also provided for the routes listed below, further links provide more in-depth information.
"Not to miss" combines highlights in Innsbruck and in the surroundings. Lively building activities have given rise to new venues and urban centres, e.g. the BTV city forum by Heinz Tesar, the SOWI by Dieter Henke and Marta Schreieck or Zaha Hadid's Hungerburg cable railway. A further Innsbruck highlight will soon be added with David Chipperfield's Kaufhaus Tyrol.
"Innsbruck aktuell" is arranged as an urban walk, leading from large functional buildings such as the new Hypo Tirol Bank by Schlögl & Süß architects to chic restaurants and cafes – Café Wine Bar Lounge 360o, Sitzwohl, Sensei Sushi Bar – or modern shops like the Wiederin bookshop.
"From Innsbruck to Hall" – or from the Lohbach housing site to Hall salt deposit – the route leads past Igls Congress Park by Albert Weber and Kurt Rumplmayr, via Amras Primary School (riccione architects) and Mpreis at Rum (Helmut Reitter, Michael Pfleger) to Hall salt deposit by Hanno Schlögl.
"Josef Lackner – a Tirolean architect" pays tribute to one of the most influential architects of the post-war era, showing twelve of his works ranging from the Parish Church of St. Pius, St. Norbert (Innsbruck) and St. Emmaus (Völs) to the Bartenbach Lighting Laboratory in Aldrans.
The latest buildings are collected in the architec(tour)
"New Building in the Tirol 2008". It is possible to see the prizewinning projects in models and photographs and to view them live. This tour also has the largest radius, leading from the bathing hut at the Natterer See to the Provincial School for Special Needs in Kramsach and the Steidl smithy at Innervillgraten.
