Tirol's largest spring festival - the Gauderfest in Zell am Ziller - is almost inseparably connected with a beer brewed especially for this occasion: the tasty "Gauderbock". And with 7.8% alcohol it is one of Austria's strongest beers.
The beer is brewed in September the previous year and bottled only three days before the 3-day festival. 400 hectoliters were brewed for this year's "Gauderfest". Since its beginnings about 500 years ago, the "Gauderbock" beer has been the fest's undisputed culinary highlight. The festival kicks off with the ceremonial tapping of the keg and the "Gambrinus" address in which politicians and celebrities are attacked in a humorous way.
Gambrinus was a mythical Flemish king said to have been the inventor of beer. During the 19th century Gambrinus enjoyed great popularity thanks to many students' songs: "there is no better life than a student's life as created by Bacchus and Gambrinus".
And this still is the motto of many a festival goer! For those who prefer a lighter brew can drink their fill of "Zwickelbier" (an unfiltered beer) or the "Schwarzes" (a dark beer with a malty aroma).
