No holiday would be perfect without culinary treats. Tirol's regions boast a great variety of specialties to suit all tastes. Those with a sweet tooth shouldn't miss out on the heavenly Prügeltorte cake.
The Prügeltorte cake is one of the more exceptional holiday dishes of the Unterinntal region. The cake is still a "must" at the region's large and traditional weddings and other festive events like parish fairs, christenings etc.
The Prügeltorte is a layered cake which consists of equal parts of sugar, flour and eggs. A true Prügeltorte is almost impossible to make at home as it requires a rotating spit over an open fire. A preheated rolling pin is dipped in batter and turned. Each new layer bakes thoroughly before adding more batter to the pin. This process takes several hours as the layers bake one at a time!
Once the cake has reached its final size it is removed from the spit. When stored in a dry and odor-free place the Prügeltorte can be kept for quite a long time and makes an ideal gift. By the way: Queen Elisabeth of England was served this "royal" cake on her visit to Tirol!
