Walking and hiking routes are graded by difficulty: white walking trails (easy), red (intermediate) and black (difficult) mountain trails.
Trail markers and detailed route descriptions help to get more detailed information about the three difficulty levels of hiking and walking routes: white walking trails, red and black mountain trails. The stages are rated according to the official Tirolean walking and hiking trail concept established by the Tirolean authorities.
Red mountain trails are moderately difficult, often narrow and steep. Some trails have short (climbing) sections which are secured with steel cables, ropes etc. Prior alpine hiking experience, surefootedness and basic hiking equipment are required as well as a good level of fitness. Trail signs are yellow with a red dot.
Black mountain trails are for experienced mountaineers only. The trails are narrow, steep, often exposed and can have long but secured climbing passages. Surefootedness and a good head for heights are an absolute must as well as prior alpine experience and good hiking equipment. Trail signs are yellow with a black dot.
