Innsbruck’s Market Hall combines the best of both worlds – the farmer’s market and specialty food stores – and has the busy ambiance of a traditional outdoor market.
The old Art Nouveau Market Hall was built in 1913/14 on the site of the old and hugely popular produce market which was held here once week for 200 years. But with an increase in population and thus in demand for fresh produce, there soon was the need for a daily market and later – to spite the weather – a market hall.
Today the “Western Hall” accommodates Tirol’s largest farmers’ market where local growers sell their fresh farm produce as well as artisan cheese, speck, herbs and other local products. A beautiful flower market is located on the way to the newer “Eastern Hall” where you find delis and specialist food stores selling everything from oven-fresh bread to organic meat, as well as saltwater and freshwater fish.
