20th Century Tirolean Music & Musicians
The editors Kurt Drexel and Monika Fink end their new standard work on “Tirol’s Music History” with a third volume.
Sketch by Josef Arnold, 1937.
It was the aim of the editors Kurt Drexel and Monika Fink to unroll the music history of Tirol, starting with prehistory.

The duo’s first two volumes already provide good insight into the spectrum of music in Tirol and present ancient representations, renaissance court music and passionate collectors, outline the development of brass music and the national singers, and comments on the role of the “funny Tirolean” in musical comedies and operettas in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The third, and last, volume of “Tirol’s Music History” was published in fall 2008, and complements the first two by providing information on the contemporary music scene. For this purpose Kurt Drexel and Monika Fink consulted with numerous experts from various fields.

Anton Pelinka, the longtime head of the Institute for Political Science in Innsbruck, wrote about the “culture historic and political environment” of this time, Gretl Köfler took male choirs as a starting point for her essay on “music and political identity”, Kurt Drexel himself wrote about “Music in Tirol between Tradition and Modernity”.

The largest part of the book is made up of articles on different genres, including folk music, brass music, church music, jazz, pop and contemporary classical music, as well as festivals, musical education, and the making of instruments.

All the different aspects highlighted in the books combine to create a good picture of the musical scene in Tirol over the last 100 years. With “Tirol’s Music History III” Kurt Drexel and Monika Fink brought their book project to a successful close.
