The experts did some thinking and made some investigations to ensure that your holidays in Tirol will be a first-class experience from start to finish!
Harald Hörmann
Harald Hörmann works at the Institute for Social Medicine in Innsbruck. The enthusiastic athlete is wheelchair-bound himself and therefore THE expert for handbike routes, wheelchair hikes and accessible hotels. These are also the three areas for which he established certain standards, also with regard to existing legal norms. Harald Hörmann visited all hotels, exposed their weak spots and helped to smooth them out. Together with colleagues he biked along all handcycle routes and checked them for suitability. “Unfortunately only few hotel responded to our request”, says Harald, “but those who did really are excellent. The owners invested a lot of money and time to offer their disabled guests the best in service and quality”.
Even in a mountainous country as Tirol it is not difficult to find quite a selection of reasonably easy handbike routes. The Inntal Cycleway, for instance, is extensive and well-developed. When it comes to high alpine routes the choice is rather limited though. "You have to be in pretty good shape for some of these trails”, Hörmann acknowledges.
Andreas Kapfinger
Andi Kapfinger, 28, a former snowboarding pro and extreme rider, was paralyzed in a freak sports accident. Andi knows that a wheelchair doesn’t keep him from adventure and exhilaration and as a true daredevil he never misses a chance to get his adrenaline flowing. Together with his girlfriend Simone Andi tested Tirol’s accessible outing destinations and activities, revealed shortcomings and weaknesses and provided hundreds of tips for improvement. "Impossible is not possible as either answer or solution”, he says with a grin. “And the most important question of all is “where is the toilet?””

Sepp Margreiter is the head of the Alpbach Ski School and therefore knows Tirol’s ski areas like the back of his hand. Being wheelchair-bound himself, Sepp is well aware of the special needs of disabled skiers and helped identify the best accessible ski areas. “A good sit-skier can ski anywhere, that’s for sure. The only obstacles are wrong or bad facilities”, he explains. His main focus was therefore on the availability of sit-ski instruction and bunny slopes.

The first steps for accessible holidays in Tirol have been made – and that’s only the beginning!
