The Eagle

The Eagle in Culture-History
The eagle has been used by many nations as a national symbol, depicting power, beauty and independence.
Wappen Grafen Tirol
The late Byzantine Empire chose a two-headed golden eagle as its symbol and the Romans used it on the standards of their armies. In Christian religion the eagle is the symbol used to depict John the Apostle. Tirol also hast the eagle on its flag.
The oldest depictions of an eagle date from 1200. The eagle was the symbol of the Tirolean “Schützen” battalion in their battle for freedom against Napoleon (1809). Eagle feathers are considered by many cultures to be incredibly powerful, valuable possessions and only the bravest and most valiant men were decorated with eagle feathers. Today the Golden Eagle is protected as a threatened species and the feathers some peoples wear on their hats are hand-painted imitations. Tirol’s heraldic animal as epitome for unspoiled nature was the namesake for one of Tirol’s long-distance hiking trail, the Tirolean Eagle Walk.
