The Tyrolean State Museum was founded in 1823 and reopened on 13 May 2003 after renovation and extension works were carried out.
The Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum with its collections is part and a reflection of the Tyrol’s identity. Up to today, it has fulfilled the tasks of documenting, evaluating and analysing as well as conveying state-specific information within all of its seven collections (prehistoric and early as well as Provincial Roman collections, art-historical collections, graphic collections, musical collection, library, historical collections and scientific collections).
A comprehensive renovation has given the Ferdinandeum a completely new look: The new modern architecture and the old elements of the building make for a perfect blend. The collection of the Tyrolean State Museum comprises both international and regional exhibits. Wandering through the museum, the visitor walks along a time line, from prehistory to Roman times, the early Middle Ages, the Romanesque period, Gothic period, the Baroque until the 19th century and the modern age. The Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum features an exquisite Dutch collection comprising works of Rembrandt and Breughel as well as the Artuqid Bowl, a masterpiece of craftsmanship dating back to the second half of the 12th century. Further exhibits include pieces of the Biedermeier collection as well as the world-famous Jakob Stainer instruments displayed in the music room.
Special exhibitions complement the collection of the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum.
