The town of Schwaz owes its prosperity and much of its historic architecture in the lovely old town to the thriving silver mining industry of the Middle Ages.
Even the splendid buildings which Emperor Maximilian I had erected in Tirol’s capital, among them the famous Golden Roof, the landmark of Innsbruck, were paid in silver from the Schwaz Silver Mine. Today, the show mine on the outskirts of town is a major, year-round attraction. What’s more, the magnificent parish church of Schwaz owes its existence to the silver mining industry as well. Leave the town on the City Bus that takes you to Hochpillberg. Pass the lift and walk towards „Kellerjochhütte“ and „Alter Kellerjochweg“. Change onto Jägersteig Trail at 1600m and climb through fields of alpine roses, passing by Naunzalm Alpine Pasture Huts to Kellerjoch Hut. From the hut, there are uninterrupted panoramic views of Tirol’s glorious mountain scenery.
The use of GPS data is at your own risk. In narrow valleys and secluded forests visual contact with satellites is not always guaranteed and data/information can be imprecise. Always check the GPS directions on your own as in alpine regions it is not possible to reach the hiking destination via beeline. You should be able to orientate yourself without GPS devices.
