Hiking with Children

Children love nothing more than running around in nature, so what better way to enjoy the mountains of Tirol than on a family-friendly hike? Options range from deep gorges with rushing rivers to informative learning trails and even summit ascents suitable for little legs.

When it comes to hiking with children, it's as much about the journey as it is about the destination. As they make their way through the mountains, kids love stopping off to pick flowers, inspect animal tracks and balance along fallen trees – nature really is one huge playground! That means it makes sense to choose a walk or hike which is suitable for little legs and has a hut with a play area or a nice place to sit down for a picnic with a campfire. If kids enjoy the experience of hiking in the mountains then they will definitely be back for more!

Tirol is the perfect place for family-friendly walks and hikes thanks to its learning trails, smooth paths suitable for buggies, lush green meadows and crystal-clear mountain lakes. There are also plenty of peaks which can be climbed by Mum, Dad and all the family, complete with a selfie at the top to show the grandparents!

Themed Hikes for Families

Fun, informative, educational. Those are three of the best words to describe the many family-friendly themed hiking trails in Tirol. Examples include the Triassic Trail in Waidring all about the fascinating world of dinosaurs. How about a trip to the Water Trail at the Umbalfälle waterfalls in East Tirol? Or maybe a day out at the Wood Trail in Zell am Ziller? All these trails, plus many more, offer the chance to learn about the flora, fauna and geology of the Tirolean Alps.

Hiking with Strollers

Families with babies and toddlers will be pleased to know that there are plenty of walking and hiking trails in Tirol suitable for buggies and strollers. Just because they are easy to walk certainly doesn't mean they are boring! Proof, if any were needed, can be found at Eng in the Karwendel Mountains in the form of a beautiful trail leading from the famous Ahornboden with its centuries-old maple trees to the Binsalm hut. Further fun but easy-to-nagivate paths can be found in the Kundler Klamm gorge near Kufstein and around the Wildsee lake on the Seefeld plateau.

Refreshing Hikes along Lakes and Gorges

Water has a magic appeal to children. It rushes, glugs, spits and splashes. That's why it is a good idea to combine hiking with water when out and about with the kids. There are lots of gorges in Tirol like the Tiefenbachklamm near Kramsach and the Leutascher Geisterklamm near Seefeld. The region's lakes are also very popular with families. Many have easy walking trails like the Hintersteinersee in the Wilder Kaiser Mountains, while others are natural jewels like the pretty Obernberger See near the Brenner pass connecting Austria and Italy.

Summits for Families

Don't be fooled into thinking that summit hikes are for adults only! There are lots of mountains in Tirol which can be climbed all the way to the top by families with children, often with the help of lifts and cable cars from the valley floor. Examples include the beautiful Wiedersbergerhorn (2,127 metres) in the Alpbachtal Valley and the Gschöllkopf (2.039 metres) by Lake Achensee with its spectacular viewing platform.

Hikes to Huts and Alpine Pastures

Hiking is hard work, but there is no better motivation than a tasty meal! Tirol has lots of traditional wooden huts serving hearty local food for adults and kids alike. Many of these huts are located at the mid-way point on hiking routes, making them a great place to stop off and re-charge your batteries. Top tips for families with kids include the Almdorf Fallerschein in the Lechtal Alps, the Kellerjochhütte between Schwaz and Fügen, and the Möslalm hut in the Kitzbühel Alps.
