Vignette Toll Stickers
If you are planning on taking the motorway, don’t forget to affix a Vignette or toll sticker to the upper right corner of your windshield. Vignette stickers can be purchased at all automobile clubs, petrol stations and border crossings. Tourists can buy a vignette valid for 10 days. If you intend to stay longer or visit Tirol several times, you can also purchase a vignette for the duration of two months or one year. The vignette allows you to drive on all Austrian motorways. Information on Border Checks near Kufstein
The Bavarian police has recently reintroduced ID checks at the border crossing at Kufstein-Kiefersfelden, which can sometimes result in delays. The checks are only carried out on people travelling north (towards Germany) on the A93 motorway.
During periods of heavy traffic – in particular at weekends during the winter season – the Tirolean regional government has agreed with the Bavarian police that a second lane on the motorway will be opened in order to speed up the checks.
Of course, travellers also have the option of taking an alternative route to Germany. The border crossing at Kufstein-Kiefersfelden is currently the only border crossing between Tirol and Germany where ID checks are carried out.
