Pilgrimages are about slowing down, reflecting on life, seeing things from a new perspective. Tirol is home to a several trails designed specifically for this purpose. A pilgrimage is more than a walk – it is a journey: a journey through nature, a journey with other people, a journey to yourself.  A pilgrimage takes you away from your daily routine and invites you to see yourself and your surroundings with new eyes. Prayer and penance, key elements of this experience in centuries past, are optional today. Religious or not, it's about being in the moment – a kind of modern meditation. Ther are a number of dedicated pilgrimage trails in Tirol. The most well-known is without a doubt the Way of Saint James, a long-distance pilgrimage route which crosses the region from east to west and eventually ends up in Santiago de Compostela. Two more popular routes in the region are the Romedius Pilgrimage Trail heading from north to south and the High & Holy circular trail in East Tirol. Each and every pilgrimage trail has plenty of places for walkers to stop and reflect: small mountain chapels, wayside shrines, cool fountains. Some also take in famous local places of pilgrimage such as  Maria Waldrast and Maria Locherboden.
