Imst

With a population of 9,700, Imst is one of the largest settlements in Tirol. The town, which features many fine examples of baroque architecture, serves as the administrative centre of the surrounding district of Imst at the foot of the Lechtal Alps.

The historic centre of Imst is home to a number of delightful baroque townhouses as well as the Kloster der Barmherzigen Schwestern convent and the 13th century Rofenstein building, once a courthouse and today the seat of the local administration. Imst is also well known for its lively culture and arts scene. One of the highlights which draws thousands of visitors from many miles away is the Schemenlaufen, a carnival procession held every four years where local menfolk parade through the town in colourful costumes. In winter the nearby Hoch-Imst ski resort is popular with beginners and families, while those looking for more of a challenge can head to the Pitztal Glacier at the end of the valley. During the warm summer months the region attracts many hikers keen to explore the Rosengartenschlucht gorge and the Blaue Grotte, a unique cave traversed by the Schinderbach stream. Outdoor enthusiasts in search of an adrenaline kick can try their hand at rafting through the Imster Schlucht canyon, rock climbing in the town’s state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor climbing centre or summer tobogganing on the Alpine Coaster, the longest summer toboggan track of its type in the Alps.
