Lanser See

This charming lake perched on a plateau to the south of Innsbruck is popular with locals and visitors alike, who are drawn by the fabulous views, exceptionally clean water, large sunbathing lawns and shady trees.

A lake as a wedding present? Almost, but not quite. In 1328, Heinrich II presented Lake Lanser See not to his new wife, Beatrice of Savoy, on the occasion of their marriage but to the Stift Wilten monastery in Innsbruck as payment in kind for the elaborate ceremony and celebrations. Today this lake at 840 metres above sea level is popular with sun worshippers from the regional capital, who flock here on warm days to cool off and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

It is situated in the Mittelgebirge mountains to the south-east of Innsbruck, around one kilometre from the village of Igls. The murky nature of the lake’s water is due to the fact that the Lanser See is fed by groundwater filtered through moorland to the north-east, making it very healthy for the skin. Courses in shiatsu, qigong and yoga are regularly offered on the shores of the lake.

There are also a number of swimming courses available as well as a pedalo hire service, table tennis tables and many other sports facilities. Other highlights include a children’s pool, swings, a sandpit with a sun shade, and a rope swing. A separate nudist area is also provided.
