Three-Lakes Circular Hike
Vilsalpsee – Traualpsee – Lache

This high alpine hike visits three beautiful lakes in the Tannheimer Tal Valley. From the Neunerköpfe mountain the route passes the Lache lake on the way to the Landsberger Hütte hut before continuing via the Traualpsee to the Vilsalpsee. The last of the three lakes is one of the most impressive in Tirol, and the surrounding nature reserve is an important habitat for rare plants and animals such as the mountain salamander and the European toad.

Trail description

The hike begins with a ride up on the eight-man gondola from Tannheim to the Neunerköpfle mountain. From the top of the gondola hikers first head to the summit of the Neunerköpfle with fantastic views of the Allgäu Alps and the lush meadows towards the Zugspitze. On the southern side of the summit there is the "Saalfelder Höhenweg" (trail no. 421) which crosses through a number of meadows. Hikers will soon see the Usseralpe and Gappenfeldalpe huts. However, the trail does not lead to the huts but instead towards the Schochenspitze mountain. The final section of the ascent to the summit is steep with a number of switchback corners. From the top of the mountain hikers will be able to see part of the Traualpsee lake as well as the Landsberger Hütte hut and the Vilsalpsee lake. From the peak of the Schochenspitze the trail descends through rockfields past the foot of the Lachenspitze mountain to the Landsberger Hütte hut. This is a good place to stop for a drink and a snack before continuing downhill to the Traualpsee lake and on to the Vilsalpsee lake. The final section back to the starting point can be completed either on foot or using the bus.
