Sailing in Tirol

Thermal winds and the jet-stream effect created by narrow mountain valleys make Tirol an ideal spot for sailing. The region's lakes offer spectacular views and are located as high as 1,500 metres above sea level. Local sailing schools offer visitors the chance to learn from scratch.

Visitors to Lake Achensee in the afternoons will know very well that the northerly "Boarische" wind can blow strongly in the Rofan Mountains and the Karwendel Mountains, thereby creating ideal conditions for sailing. Regattas with international fields are regularly held on Lake Achensee.

However, Tirol's largest lake is by no means the only body of water in the region suitable for sailing. The fjord-like Plansee lake in the westerly Außerfern area of Tirol and the Durlaßboden reservoir at 1,400 metres above sea level are also popular with sailing enthusiasts. Beginners, on the other hand, can take lessons at one of the sailing schools and go home from their holiday not only with great memories but also with a sailing license in hand.

The experience of cruising through crystal-clear waters between mighty mountains and lush valleys is a truly unique sensation which visitors to Tirol should definitely not miss out on. Below you will find information on the most popular sailing areas in Tirol.
