Tirolean Tracht

Dirndl and lederhosen, the quintessential national costume, illustrate Tirol's history through fashion. Today the wearing of the national costume in Tirol is not only a history or custom; it's more of a lifestyle.

Influenced by the costumes of farmers, peasants and rural people, and characterized by the use of high-quality fabrics, such as linen, leather, loden (a traditional type of felt that has recently gained popularity worldwide) and embroidery, the Tirolean costume is generally regarded as a sign of national pride; in material, color and shape it is increasingly subject to modern influences. In fact, the Tirolean costume has inspired an entirely new fashion style, called Landhausmode (Country House Style). Designers have adopted various rustic elements and embroidery and combined them with latest fashion trends.

The Tirolean Trend on the Runways

The result are striking clothes that embody all that is true and uniquely Tirolean and that promise individuality, uncompromising looks, durability and comfort. Tirolean Tracht: Living Culture

Among the most enthusiastic followers of the Tirolean costume tradition is the Provincial Association of Tirolean Tracht. Its more than 10,000 members are dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the cultural heritage of Tirol. In everyday life, the Tirolean costume is mainly worn on special occasions such as festivals, weddings, and religious occasions. Local marching Brass Bands and Schuetzen have made the Tracht more uniform, i.e., all the members wear the same color ties, skirts, jackets, socks, etc. at public performances. Nowadays, newly formed bands and associations even design their own local, national costume.
