A long journey on foot is, above all, a journey to your inner self. Parts of the European Long Distance Trails lead through Tirol. Or you walk from hut to hut to experience that feeling of solitude our mountains offer.
Many walkers and hikers prefer to spend the night in the mountains instead of returning to the valley. Tirol boasts about 170 shelters plus an abundance of mountain huts where you can overnight before climbing a peak or continuing your journey the next day. And if you wish you can even let horses – in Tirol it’s mainly Haflingers, carry your gear for you! Many hotels, such as the Tirolean Hiking Hotels for instance, arrange multi-day walks with luggage transfer. True hiking freaks could do one of the long distance trails that cross all of Europe. Some of them lead through Tirol, such as the E5 (from Lake Constance to the Adriatic Sea), and the Via Alpina linking eight European countries.
