The German Alpine Association (DAV) was founded in 1869 and has some 715,000 members today. The association’s 355 departments maintain a dense network of hiking trails and a total of 332 mountain refuges of which 183 are located in Austria. In 2004, the DAV started an initiative called “Adventure Hiking” which is aimed at avid hikers of all ages.
