Like ski slopes, trails are graded by difficulty to help you find a trail that matches your fitness and experience level.
Hiking Trails are suitable for everyone. Neither prior hiking experience nor any special equipment are needed. The trails are wide and well-maintained, and there are no significant climbs or descents. Trail signs are yellow.
Red Mountain Trails are moderately difficult, often narrow and steep. Some trails have short (climbing) sections which are secured with steel cables, ropes etc. Prior alpine hiking experience, sure-footedness an basic hiking equipment are required as well as a good level of fitness. Trail signs are yellow with a red dot.
Black Mountain Trails are for experienced mountaineers only. The trails are narrow, steep, often exposed and can have long, albeit secured, climbing passages. Sure-footedness and a good head for heights are a must as well as prior alpine experience and good hiking equipment. Trail signs are yellow with a black dot.
Alpine Trails are very difficult. They wind their way through high alpine terrain, are exposed and have climbing passages without any steel cables to hold on to. Due to the terrain, Alpine trails are for very sure-footed hikers only. The trails are not maintained and signs are only sporadic. An excellent sense of orientation, some climbing skills and prior alpine mountaineering experience are required. Trails are marked as
STEIG.
