Winterurlaub in Tirol
High Altitude Summer Retreat
Within the entire Province of Tirol some 180,000 cattle, horses, sheep and goats spend their summer – approximately 120 days – on the lush green, high Alpine pasturelands. A highlight not to be missed!
A truly outstanding parade of colorfully decorated farm animals! The traditional economy of the Alps was based on rearing cattle. Seasonal migration between valley and high pastures was critical in feeding an increased number of cattle and supporting a higher human population. That practice has shaped a lot of landscape in the Alpine pasturelands as - still today - every summer some 205,000 hectares of pastures are cultivated. A single cow needs approximately 40 square meters per day!

From September to early October the herds are brought down from the high Alpine pastures. The cattle wear elaborate headdresses for the occasion, and the clanging of cow bells accompanies brass bands. In Tirol this day is deeply rooted in tradition. Come and celebrate with us!
