Aurach bei Kitzbühel

Situated five kilometres south of Kitzbühel, home of the legendary Hahnenkamm downhill ski race, Aurach lies at the start of the Jochbergtal Valley leading up to the Thurn Pass connecting Tirol and Salzburg.

The municipality is home to 1,100 inhabitants and many old farmhouses, some of which are beautifully decorated with frescoes. The area has a long and proud tradition of copper mining at the Kelchalm, starting with pre-Christian settlers and ending only in 1926 with the closure of the last pit. One of the main highlights in Aurach is the Wildpark Tirol, the region’s largest open-air animal enclosure. Here at 1,100m altitude visitors can admire species native to the Alps as well as more exotic creatures such as lamas, yaks, alpacas and sika deer. There is also a petting zoo for children. A large network of hiking and mountain bike trails gives access to the impressive landscape around Kitzbühel, including the Oberkaseralm hut with its excellent views of the Wilder Kaiser Mountains, while families with children can explore themed hiking trails such as the Kapellenweg and the Erbhofweg. Wintersports enthusiasts are spoilt for choice with the world-famous Kitzbühel ski resort right on their doorstep.
