Gerlosberg is a small, peaceful village at the start of the Gerlostal Valley, located just a matter of kilometres from Zell am Ziller, on a south-facing slope of the 2,135m high Karspitze. Here, far from busy roads and the hustle and bustle of larger towns and villages, holidaymakers can enjoy absolute peace and quiet. The village’s 460 inhabitants live in numerous farmsteads spread across the mountainside, some of which are only accessible on foot. Below, the rushing Gerlosbach stream carves its way through the narrow valley, with gorge-like sections cut deep into the rock. Centuries ago, locals made a living from gold mining; the neighbouring village of Hainzenberg is now home to a show mine. Today it is tourism and the Zillertal Arena in particular which draw people to this corner of Tirol. In winter the Arena offers a large ski resort with slopes catering for all abilities, while in summer it is a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers. Popular activities include walks along the Gerlosberger Kreuzweg hiking trail, the Arena Coaster summer toboggan run in nearby Zell am Ziller, the Skyliner rope slide and the many whitewater rafting opportunities in the surrounding valleys.
