Götzens

Greeen yet urban: Situated on a raised plateau 7km south-west of Innsbruck, the municipality of Götzens is surrounded by lush green meadows and home to many people who work in the nearby regional capital.

Perched on a high plateau above the Inntal Valley, just seven kilometres from Innsbruck, lies the quiet village of Götzens. This historic settlement surrounded by lush alpine meadows is home to around 4,000 people and boasts a number of magnificent old farmhouses as well as the opulent St. Peter and Paul church of pilgrimage. Looking down on the village itself are the ruins of the once mighty Burg Vellenberg, a fortress built in the 12th century. Holidays here combine the best of nature and culture, with both high mountain peaks and the bright lights of Innsbruck just a few minutes away. In winter, skiers and snowboarders can take the Götzner Bahn up onto the slopes of the Pfriemesköpfl ski resort at 1,800m, while families will enjoy the easy slopes of the Mutterer Alm. Another resort popular nearby is the Axamer Lizum, which hosted skiing competitions at the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. During the warm summer months there are many hiking trails, including the Almweg between the Götzener Alm and Kreither Alm huts as well as the Panoramaweg trail between the villages of Grinzens and Mutters.
