Gries am Brenner

As the name indicates, Gries am Brenner lies just a few kilometres from the Brenner pass connecting Austria and Italy. In Roman times this village was an important stopping point on the north-south transit route.

The village is characterised by centuries-old houses lining the main road, which was used millennia ago by the Romans. This tradition of Gries as an important stop on the north-south transit routes continues today, though thanks to the construction of the Brennerautobahn motorway the village itself is a haven of peace.

Its central position in the Wipptal Valley makes Gries am Brenner a popular starting point for hiking in summer and ski touring in winter. All in all there are 500 kilometres of signposted hiking trails leading past crystal-clear mountain lakes and up onto the Blaser, one of the most flower-rich mountains in Tirol. Ski touring enthusiasts will enjoy the many routes in winter.
