Igls

Even as early as the 19th century residents of Innsbruck would travel up to the village of Igls to the south of the regional capital to escape the heat of the city and enjoy the stunning views. Many went on to build villas in this sunny location and make it their home.

Igls has a population of around 2,000 inhabitants and is officially part of Innsbruck, though the centre of the regional capital is around 5 kilometres further north. The village can be easily reached from Innsbruck by tram. Thanks to its position on a sunny plateau at the foot of the iconic Patscherkofel mountain, Igls is a destination popular with holidaymakers and daytrippers. The Patscherkofel mountain has hosted downhill skiing and bobsleigh events of the Winter Olympics on two occasions, in 1964 and 1976, and can be accessed via a cable car which leaves from Igls. Today it is still a popular ski resort in winter and hiking area in summer. Golf enthusiasts will find a nine-hole course in the neighbouring village of Lans.
