Itter

The pretty village of Itter lies on a sunny plateau above the Inntal Valley at the point where the Mühltal Valley and the Brixental Valley converge.

Forming part of the municipality of Kitzbühel, it is home to 1,160 inhabitants and dominated by the mighty Itter Castle built at least 600 years ago and visible for many miles around. Even more imposing is the Hohe Salve mountain towering high above the village at an altitude of 1,829m. The mountain, whose views are considered some of the most spectacular in Tirol, lies in the heart of what is Austria’s largest interconnected ski area: the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental. This large resort with slopes catering for all abilities can be accessed directly from Itter using the Salvista-Gondelbahn cable car. The Hohe Salve mountain is also a popular outdoor playground during the summer months. Hikers can walk to the summit on the Gipfelrundwanderweg and pay a visit to the Johanneskapelle on the way, Austria’s highest pilgrimage church. There is a further pilgrimage chapel at the Kraftalm. Children will enjoy the Hexenwasser outdoor adventure centre in Hochsöll, while the open air swimming pool in Itter is the ideal place to cool off on hot summer days.
