Jochberg

Ten kilometres south of Kitzbühel, half way towards the Pass Thurn which connects Tirol and Salzburg, lies the quiet village Jochberg home to 1,550 residents.

One of its main attractions is the Kupferplatte show mine where visitors can travel 150 metres underground into one of the ancient pits. Indeed, Jochberg was one of the earliest centres of copper mining; first evidence of mining activity dates way back to 1245 BC. Experts also believe that there were smelting furnaces on site during this period. These days it is skiing and not mining which draws people to the region. A cable car from Jochberg offers direct access to the Hahnenkamm/Pengelstein ski area with its wide range of pistes up to an altitude of 2,000m. In summer the area is a haven for hikers. Popular walks include the family-friendly trail leading through flower-filled meadows up to the Lämmerbühelalm hut, the 7-Brunnen-Weg and the 85m high Sintersbacher waterfall.
