The small municipality of Jungholz to the north-west of the Tannheimer Tal Valley is part of Tirol yet at the same time stretches deep into German territory.

Indeed, all roads leading to this Tirolean “exclave” in Bavaria pass through Germany – the only point which connects Jungholz to the rest of Austria is the 1,636m Sorgschrofen mountain. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the 300 residents who call Jungholz home – 50/50 Germans and Austrians – refer to this geographic anomaly as “a piece of Tirol in the Allgäu” in reference to the surrounding Allgäu region in southern Bavaria. Among the many curiosities arising from this unusual situation is that products and services offered in Jungholz are subject to German and not Austrian VAT. Many Germans make the short trip “over the border” to enjoy the quiet atmosphere in this sunny village faraway from busy roads and large towns. Another attraction for nature lovers is the only herb garden in Tirol, where many herbs are available to buy at the annual herb market held every August. During the winter months there is a small but perfectly formed ski resort ideal for families and beginners, while in summer the Felsenbad outdoor pool is popular.
