Pfons

Pfons is a municipality to the east of the Sill river with a population of 1,043. It lies on a sunny mountain slope in the north of the Wipptal Valley at 840 metres above sea level.

The municipality of Pfons borders Matrei am Brenner and inclues a number of hamlets and individual farmhouses set apart from the main village. The mountain above the village used to be mined for "Matrei marble", which was used to build many churches in Tirol as well as the Burgtheater theatre and the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Pfons is also home to a number of buildings which are interesting from a historical point of view. It used to be one of the important stopping points on the "salt road" which was used to transport this white gold via Ellbögen to Hall in Tirol. The region around Pfons is popular in both winter and summer thanks to its many outdoor activities and beautiful landscape. Maria Waldrast, a Servite monastery with a medicinal spring and large guesthouse, is situated above Matrei.
