Reutte

Reutte lies in a wide valley floor in the Außerfern area of Tirol, not far from the foothills of the Allgäu Alps. It has a population of 6,300 and is one of just two district capitals in the Tirol region which is not officially a town.

With both the mighty Lech river and several beautiful alpine lakes nearby, it is little surprise that many of the most popular activities in the region revolve around water. The Heitwangersee and Plansee lakes at around 1,000m altitude draw sailors, windsurfers, rowers and anglers. In summer there are even sightseeing boats. Reutte itself has many fine townhouses with elaborate frescoes painted by local artist Johann Jakob Zeiller. These include the 16th century Grünes Haus, which is today home to a local history museum. Reutte is also known as a hotspot for culture and the arts. Highlights include the annual medieval games held at the Burgruine Ehrenberg, a series of events each autumn as part of the “Reuttener Kulturherbst”, and the “Integrationsfest”, an event celebrating different cultures from around the world. All these attractions and more draw thousands of tourists to the region. In winter it is not far to the small but perfectly formed Hahnenkamm ski area.
