Schattwald

Situated close to the Bavarian border, Schattwald is the westernmost village in the Tannheimer Tal Valley and has a population of around 400.

Schattwald is made up of the settlements Kappl, Wies, Fricken, Steig, Vilsrain and Rehbach. The small Vils river flows through the municipality. Both in summer and winter it is a popular destination for holidaymakers. Together with nearby Zöblen it has five lifts and forms the largest skiing area in the Tannheimer Tal Valley. Cross-country skiers can explore the 140 kilometres of trails. Schattwald is also home to the oldest ski school in the valley. In summer there are plenty of signposted hiking trails leading up into the Allgäu Alps and to natural jewels such as the Vilsalpsee lake and the Neunerköpfle mountain. A hike onto the Wannenjoch mountain overlooking the village is also a must for visitors. Those who prefer to take it easy can use the Wannenjochbahn cable car, which even operates early in the morning so that visitors can watch the sun rise from the top of the mountain.
