Surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Wilder Kaiser Mountains, Scheffau has managed to maintain its picturesque charm and traditional village character.
Finds dating back to the 9th century indicate that the first settlers in the region around Scheffau probably came from neighbouring Bavaria. Later, Scheffau would go on to become one of several villages near Kufstein which swapped time and again between Bavarian and Habsburg control.
These days, guests – both from Bavaria and elsewhere – come in peace to this village at the foot of the Wilder Kaiser mountains to enjoy the beautiful scenery and outdoor activities on offer. The village has managed to maintain its original character and is the ideal base for exploring the south-west peaks of the Wilder Kaiser that, together with the Zahmer Kaiser, forms the Naturschutzgebiet Kaisergebirge nature park.
Even today it is still unclear how the Kaisergebirge (literally “Emperor’s Massif”) got its name. Documents from the 13th century mention that the mountains in this region were referred to in Middle High German as “Chaiser”. And, after all, who would dare suggest that these peaks and craggy rock faces glistening in the sun are anything but imperial?
