Telfes

Telfes is a village at an altitude of almost 1,000 m near the start of the Stubaital Valley, just under 18 km from the regional capital Innsbruck.

Centuries ago this municipality of around 1,500 residents was an important centre of iron production and metal working, leading to it becoming relatively wealthy. This history can still be seen on some of the elaborate frescoes which decorate local farmhouses. In summer, the village is awash with colour thanks to the many rose bushes next to the roads and on the wooden balconies. In 2012, a display of 1,600 bushes earned Telfes the title of “Austria’s rose village”. The Schlick 2000 ski resort lies within the borders of the principality, while the Stubai Glacier at the end of the valley is just a short drive away. In summer, the Kalkkögel mountains – known as the "Dolomites of North Tirol" – are a hotspot for rock climbers, hikers and mountaineers. Those looking for a real challenge can take part in the Schlickeralmlauf, a mountain run finishing atop the 2,099 m high Kreuzjoch mountain. Also well worth a visit is the Greifvogelpark Telfes, a birds of prey centre home to around 50 species native to the Alps.
