Based on interviews with over seventy people born in Western Europe towards the end of World War II, the new opera We Are The Lucky Ones by composer Philip Venables and librettists Ted Huffman and Nina Segal portrays a generation that started with little, experienced growing prosperity, and is now leaving behind a world that seems unable to sustain growth. In 100 minutes, music and language, experiences, dreams, and memories blend in 60 scenes with reflections on the relationship between the private and the political, the effects of personal choices, and what truly matters in light of pessimistic forecasts about the future of our world. The opera premiered with great success on March 14, 2025, at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam and is now experiencing its Austrian premiere in Erl.
