An evening full of English and German masterpieces from the 16th to 18th centuries: Henry Purcell's stage music, from the heartfelt lament Music for a while from Oedipus to the cheerful dances from The Old Bachelor and the patriotic tones of Fairest Isle from King Arthur, unfolds baroque variety. Two elaborate Fantasias à 4 showcase Purcell's contrapuntal mastery. John Dowland's lute songs Time stands still and Thou mighty God combine melancholic beauty with heartfelt expressiveness. The highlight is Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations BWV 988 in the arrangement by Michael Andrew Seaton – a cosmos of baroque form art, whose variation technique unites virtuosity and expression in perfect balance.
