ICG go IBK – Tirol Hosts the 2016 International Children’s Games

Updated on 20.03.2017 in Bits & Pieces
From January 12 to 16, 2016, Tirol plays host to the 2016 International Children’s Games. In this guest blog, the organising committee of the 2016 International Children’s Games explains what the Children’s Games are all about and how you could be a part of it.

To journey to Tirol is to journey to the heart of sport. As the leading sports venue in the Alps, Tirol has a rich experience in hosting major events. With the International Children’s Games set to begin in January 2016, the country’s sporting facilities are getting final touch-ups. Tirol will welcome athletes and their coaches from around the world to the International Children’s Games (ICG), the largest multi-sport youth games in the world and a recognised member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). From January 12 to 16, 2016, Innsbruck and environs will host the 7th edition of the International Children’s Winter Games. Venues are the ski runs of Axamer Lizum, the Freestyle Terrain Park in Kühtai, the Seefeld Arena, the Ice Arena Telfs and Götzens and the Innsbruck Olympia World.

In difference to the Olympic Games, it’s not nations but cities that send athletes to the Games. With great hospitality and the help of volunteers, the ICG-Team of Innsbruck will strive to host an outstanding event in January 2016 for teams coming from 70 different cities: 1,200 young athletes from around the world between 13 and 15 years of age will compete for their chance at glory in eight winter sports activities, including Alpine skiing, Nordic Skiing and biathlon, figure and speed skating along with freestyle skiing, snowboarding and ice hockey.

Sport, performance and top results are not the only items on the agenda of these Games, they should also be a contribution to learning about foreign cultures and ways of life. For this purpose, trips, sightseeing tours and leisure events are offered to enable the participants to discover the host town and its surrounding area and to meet new friends.

The aim of the Innsbruck 2016 International Children’s Games is to enable, develop and advance the meeting, understanding and friendship of student-athletes from countries around the world and to promote the Olympic ideal. However, as young as the athletes may be, competition will be fierce. Focusing on their task, they will give their personal best to execute it perfectly—and seriously!

BY THE WAY: Those who love sports and enjoy being involved in the ICG can join the volunteer team tirol. Volunteers are needed in 18 different fields. This is a perfect way to get close up and personal with a major sports event.

Innsbruck is not called the Olympic Town for nothing: Tirol is repeatedly chosen as venue to host high calibre sport events—Innsbruck played host to the 1964 & 1976 Olympic Winter Games, to the Paralympics in 1984 & 1988, and to the Inaugural Youth Olympic Winter Games (YOG) in 2012. Innsbruck and Tirol have a strong and proud tradition to draw upon. With the organisation of the 2016 International Children’s Games in Innsbruck, Tirol will write a new chapter in the history of hosting major sporting events. There’s plenty of excitement and anticipation in Tirol, as Innsbruck prepares to host the world’s largest multi-sport youth games!
