Knitting Tutorial: How to Knit a Hat
Two years ago, I rediscovered crocheting and this year I’ve decided to go back to the basics and start knitting again. Helga from the “Glatt Verkehrt” Yarn Shop in Innsbruck has shared this easy pattern for beginning knitters with me:
Basketweave Knit Stitch
Cast on a total of 80 stitches for this pattern.
The basketweave knit stitch is a simple stitch pattern that is achieved with just the basic knit and purl stitches. Understand that „k“ stands for „knit“ in this pattern and „p“ stands for purl. The number that follows designates how many of that stitch to do. So „p4“ means, „purl four stitches.“ Start with k4, p4 across for 4 rows, then work p4, k4 across for 4 rows and repeat. This makes simple blocks of texture that are very easy once a rhythm is established.
Knit until your hat measures 15 to 17cm, then start to knit two together to make the „crown“ of the hat. This means that you knit 2 stitches together into a single stitch, decreasing the amount of stitches in that row (known as „k2tog“ for „knit“ and „p2tog“ for purl):
Row 1: k2, k2tog, p4, repeat
Row 2: Knit around, k3, p4, repeat
Row 3: k3, p2, p2tog, repeat
Row 4: Knit around, k3, p3, repeat
Row 5: p1, p2tog, k3, repeat
Row 6: Knit around, p2, k3, repeat
Row 7: p2, k1, k2tog, repeat
Row 8: Knit around, p2, k2, repeat
Row 9: k2tog, p2tog, repeat
Row 10: Knit around, k1, p2, repeat
Row 11: k1, p2tog, repeat
Row 12: Knit around, k1, p1, repeat
Row 13: k2tog around
Finishing the Hat:
Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail into the yarn needle and insert the needle into the remaining stitches, lifting them off of the knitting needle. Pull the yarn tight to close the hole and weave in the ends of the yarn to secure the free end. When you’re sure that the yarn won’t come loose and unravel your hat, cut the rest of the tail off with scissors.
Proudly presenting: The finished hat!
With this pattern you can easily knit your own beanie hat, too, just work it a little bit longer than 17cm.
What you will need: For knitting the hat, you can use size 5 circulars or straight knitting needles and Alta Moda Alpaca Yarn by Lana Grossa, colour petrol blue (you will only need 1 ball as this yarn is 140 meters long!).

Once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be able to knit a hat in two to three hours. As a beginner, it will take you about a week if you are knitting every evening. As a basic rule, take your time as picking up a dropped stich can be quite tricky ;-). Happy knitting!
