Set Jetting: Achensee Lake Area starring Daniel Brühl in „The Edukators“

Thinking of Tirol’s Lake Achensee, being on set on a remote mountain cabin is what comes to the mind of German actor Daniel Brühl. It was here in the Tirolean Alps where scenes of the low budget film "The Edukators" were filmed, a movie that was praised by critics and audiences and received a number of awards and nominations.

Lake Achensee, Tirol’s largest lake, is lovingly dubbed “Fiord of the Alps”. In 2004, this scenic area was used as a backdrop for shooting „The Edukators“ with Daniel Brühl in the starring role. The German actor was introduced to mainstream U.S. audiences with his breakout role of a German war hero in Quentin Tarantino’s „Inglourious Basterds“, and appeared in films such as „The Bourne Ultimatum“, „The Fifth Estate“ and „A Most Wanted Man“. Brühl received widespread critical acclaim and further recognition for his portrayal of former Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda in the biographical film „Rush“. Despite his international success, Daniel Brühl remained humble and rooted. And he has fond memories of filming in Tirol: „The entire team enjoyed the restorative effect of nature. Of course, the great outdoors is good for personal wellbeing“, says Brühl.

„The Edukators“ (German: „Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei“) is a German-Austrian crime drama film directed by Hans Weingartner. The film revolves around three young anti-capitalist activists who call themselves „the Edukators“, invade upper-class houses in Berlin, rearrange the furniture, and leave the message „Your days of plenty are numbered“ („Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei“). When a rich businessman catches the three friends in the act, they rashly decide to kidnap him and take him to a remote, rarely used cabin in the Tirolean Alps, overlooking Achensee Lake. Most of the film was shot in Berlin, which is why Daniel Brühl describes the scenes that were shot in the mountains an “oasis of peace”. On long-distance hikes along Tirol’s Eagle Walk, Daniel Brühl gathers strength for future challenges, studies his roles and visits the places where „The Edukators“ was filmed.

The Eagle Walk and amazing Achensee Region lend itself to outstanding hiking and climbing, mountain biking and paragliding. And everywhere you go there are lovely places to take a rest and enjoy a hearty “Marend“, a platter of finest local charcuterie and cheese specialties.
