Lake Salfeins with views of the Kalkkögel – a whole family experience

Updated on 20.12.2016 in Family

September 2012 014

Last weekend, I experienced one of my most beautiful family hikes yet: Lake Salfeins in Senderstal.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t persuade my husband to join us – he’d chosen to tackle another Tirol mountain by bike instead. So my daughter Mia and I borrowed another family – Mia’s friend Sophia and her parents…

To reach our start point in Grinzens, we drove along a toll road (3 €) in the direction of Kemater Alm pasture.

We left our car at the first car park and walked over the bridge to the forest. After following a winding path, we arrived at a small hut, where we began climbing uphill (sign-posting is very clear). With a third of our walk already down, we reached a scenic point which gave views across a wide part of the Inn Valley – simply stunning. We also came across a summit cross (although we hadn’t actually reached a summit), which got the children very excited, so we stopped to take photos. As we continued to climb, we encountered a series of small brooks which the children had great fun crossing. We even found blueberries along the way!

At around 500-metres above sea level we reached our goal – Lake Salfeins. The lake itself isn’t anything special but the surrounding panorama is simply stunning – the perfect postcard view – and, on this windless day, the surrounding Kalkkoegel Mountains were perfectly reflected in the lake’s mirror-like water. The surrounding meadows made a wonderful place to lie back and soak up the sun while the children – who, somehow, were still full of energy – leapt around in excitement at finding Alpine salamanders in the lake.

With a passion for detail and a twinkle in her eye, Christina Schwemberger takes you on a journey to meet amazing people, visit interesting places and experience all that Tirol has to offer.
