4 Not-to-Miss Mountain Experiences

Updated on 25.07.2016 in Recommendations

Spending a night on a quaint high mountain hut. Crossing an international border high in the mountains. Foraging wild mushrooms and preparing a “Tiroler Gröstl”. Or, simply, dipping toes into the freezing water of a nice cold creek. There are plenty of ways to spend your time in Tirol—and so many magical moments to be experienced. Below you’ll find four of the top can’t-miss experiences in Tirol’s mountains.

Experience #1: Sleeping in the Mountains

For an unforgettable escape, spend a night on a high mountain hut. Find out what it’s like to slip into a pair of pajamas at 120-year old Innsbruck Hut. Sitting at an elevation of 2,369 meters, the hut offers dorm-style lodging in bunk beds—or you can spend the night in your private hut suite for added convenience. For a smooth start, Stubaierhof Hotel’s private taxi service called “Hurra die Gams!” will take you up to Kararlm Alpine Pasture Hut. From there, it’s a delightful 1.5 to 2 hour walk across the amazingly scenic Stubai Alps to get to your base for that night, Innsbrucker Hut. Your host for the night, Marlene, is a smiley Tirolean lady who serves locally sourced and mountain-inspired fare and homemade apricot eau de vie and will make you feel truly at home. In the morning, you will wake up to the sun peeking its head out on the horizon. A sunrise is a perfect way to kick start the day, before you walk back down to the valley, to Stubaierhof Hotel.

Experience #2: Crossing an International Border High in the Mountains

Posted by Vitalhotel Mühle – Obergurgl on Thursday, July 17, 2014

Join an experienced mountain guide for a memorable, border-crossing walk from Tirol’s Ötztal Valley into Italy’s South Tyrol. Following World War I, brave residents of the Inner Ötztal Valley used these snow-laden trails to transport goods across the ‘green border’ to Italy—and back home. They mainly smuggled wine, tobacco and sugar. This amazing walk follows These historic smuggler’s trails across atop 2,852-meter Königsjoch Col and crosses the border into Italy’s South Tyrol. There, you will enjoy a hearty charcuterie platter over live music. Afterwards, a shuttle bus will bring you back to your point of departure, Vitalhotel Mühle.

Experience #3: Foraging Mushrooms & Cooking Tiroler Gröstl

A long day’s play in the mountain works up quite an appetite. That’s why I always look forward to taking a rest on a mountain hut to gather new strength over hearty local delicacies. In the Zillertal Alps, mountain guide Erich will take you on a “Hut Brunch” walk. En route, he will tell you the names of the most prominent peaks—and he will guide you to the hidden spots where you will find a huge variety of mushrooms, hopefully. At the destination end of the walk, which is 200 year old Gaspingerhof Alpine Pasture Hut, you will then enjoy a mouthwatering Tirol staple: Known as “Gröstl”, this bacon, onion and potato fry-up is a real Alpine filler and tastes great with the foraged wild mushrooms!

Experience #4: Dipping Toes Into the Freezing Water

When hiking in hot weather, your feet will probably tend to swell and throb some. To counteract this effect on this easy walk into the “Valley of 1,000 Orchids” in Tirol’s Oberland Region, you will remove your shoes and socks and slip into “Fivefingers” barefoot shoes. Nothing in the world feels better on swollen, achy feet than getting dunked in nice cold Tschey Creek! The creek stones massage your soles and tootsies, and the flowing water increases circulation, numbs the pain, reduces inflammation and makes everything feel good for a little while. After this refreshing treatment, you’ll be brought back to WanderHotel Gasthof Berghof by shuttle bus.

Start exploring Tirol with these four special experiences, which are just a few snapshots among plenty more amazing encounters you’ll have when staying with one of the 16 HikersHotels*Tirol.
