The 11 best shops and restaurants in Innsbruck

Updated on 20.12.2016 in Recommendations

Weisses_Roessl

This post is all about the shops, cafes and restaurants in Innsbruck’s Old Town which I most like to eat, drink and shop at. I’m going to show you some independent shops which are a world away from the city’s chain stores and international brands. In my opinion, these rare places reveal a lot about a city and its inhabitants. Join me in the Old Town and discover a new, exciting and surprising side of the city.

Held Hüte (Hero hats)

A wonderful, old-fashioned hat shop, come here to try on contemporary and high-quality hats as well as classic styles. With friendly staff giving genuine and honest advice, it’s a great experience. www.held-innsbruck.at

Speckschwemme

Speckschwemme2

Conveniently located, this tiny bacon and smoked meat business in Stiftgasse street sells high quality goods, and is highly regarded throughout the Tirol.

Tirol soap and candle factory

Kerzengeschaeft1

A rustic business located in the Pfarrgasse area, right next to the cathedral. Expect a huge selection of candles and soaps, all made here in Tirol. You can even buy candles by the kilogram. www.walde.at

Katzung2

Cafe Katzung

A modern cafe within the historic Old Town. A chic setting but very friendly atmosphere, it’s a popular Innsbruck meeting place and serves excellent cakes and pies. www.cafe-katzung.at/

Muehlmann1

Fashion from Mühlmann

This small shop sells self-designed, chic and unusual fashions from East Tirol. Aimed at both men and women, the unique and high-quality garments are affordable and individual yet very wearable. www.muehlmann.eu/shopibk

Anton Götsch

Greisslerei1

This small grocery store in the Kiebachgasse 6 area is a real gem, selling hard to find cereals and interesting vegetables, as well as a fantastic range of wines and spirits, including many local specialties

Gasthof Weisses Rössl (White Horse Inn)

For me, this is the best place to find traditional cuisine in the Old Town. Expect a relaxed atmosphere and very good food at mid-range prices. The accommodation is also really good here, with beautiful yet affordable rooms. www.roessl.at

Weinhaus Happ

This first floor restaurant overlooks Innsbruck’s spectacular Golden Roof and serves traditional and international cuisine in its famous ‘Baumann room’ – a rather unusual wooden room which dates back to the 1930’s, designed by the famous Innsbruck architect Franz Baumann. www.weinhaus-happ.at

Cafe Konditorei Mundin

Munding1

The oldest confectionery in Tirol is an Innsbruck institution. Opened in 1803, it has since been renovated and now has a distinct 1950’s atmosphere. Serving coffee and legendary cakes, this unique café is popular with tourists and locals alike. www.munding.at

Baecker_Kroell1

Feinbäckerei Kroell (Bakery Kroll)
For the best bread in the Old Town, visit this small bakery. In addition to lovely loaves, the deserts are exceptional. A high quality bakery and a welcome change from standard bread and supermarket loaves. Bakery Kroll, Riesengasse 9

Schmollgruber Watches

Schmollgruber

This wonderful specialty shop near the cathedral is the place to buy impressive watches. A pilgrimage site for watch aficionados across the world, admire this shop’s ornate pocket watches and historic timepieces. www.uhrenschmollgruber.at

World traveller, lover of new experiences, and Tirol aficionado Eckard Speckbacher is out exploring the hidden attractions. He offers insight into places and destinations that are less well known, along with restaurant and hotel recommendations.
