The Most Atmospheric Christmas Markets in Tirol

Updated on 14.12.2015 in Recommendations

Schoenster Weihnachtsmarkt in Oesterreich – Innsbruck

There is plenty to see and do around Tirol when the most wonderful time of the year rolls around. Some of the simplest joys of the season are the atmospheric Christmas Markets taking place throughout the country and celebrating the traditional sights, sounds and scents of Christmas. As day becomes night, thousands of lights sparkle and the spicy bouquet of hot mulled wine and mouth-watering delicacies waft through the air, and spirits are high—this is where holiday momentum really builds!

Tirol is home to of some of Austria’s best loved and most atmospheric Christmas Markets, and here are my personal favourites:

Rattenberg Christmas Market

Forget the daily routine and find a haven of peace and quiet at the Christmas Market in the medieval small town of Rattenberg. The lovely, historic pedestrianized main road will exclusively be lit by candles, torches and open fires on the four Saturdays during Advent Season. Lovingly decorated stalls are stacked with delectable foods and the special Rattenberg Advent Mulled Wine. Rattenberg’s historic center is dotted by specialist glass shops that will sell their elaborate and unique glass art designs and original hand blown creations.

Christmas Market beneath the Golden Roof in Innsbruck

At the heart of the picturesque, medieval town center of Innsbruck, surrounded by majestic, snow-covered mountains at the foot of the world famous „Golden Roof,“ you will find a Christmas Market of truly Alpine flavour. It celebrates the sights, sounds and scents of Christmas with a mighty Christmas tree. Listen to the wind players over a cup of hot mulled wine and stroll around the old town district’s quieter side lanes. The Innsbruck Christmas Market is a gift for visitors of all ages!

Mayrhofen Christmas Market

The waymarked “Silent Night” interpretive trail is your gateway to the atmospheric Mayrhofen Christmas Market at the Forest Festivity Area. The romantic market offers the unique opportunity to find the true sense of Christmas without the hustle and bustle of tinsel and hectic schedules. Meet and mingle with family and friends by the open fire, while listening to wind players and traditional singing. Lovingly decorated stalls sell mouth-watering Advent and Christmas specialties, such as tasty “Zillertal Krapfen”, a local staple, and spicy mulled wine.

Pitztal Mountain Christmas

Pitztal Mountain Christmas is no Christmas market in the true sense of the word, but it is nevertheless definitely worth visiting. During Advent season, the hamlet of Plangeroß is transformed into a unique Advent Calendar. Each evening, a lovingly Christmas-theme decorated window is opened in a home and the family living there welcomes visitors with homemade specialties. On Thursday evenings, there’s a torchlight walk followed by a short service in the forest.

Hall Christmas Market

The charming Old Town of Hall makes an inspirational statement with its unmatched Christmas illuminations on houses in the town center. The closer Christmas comes, the more the house fronts of Hall’s Upper Town Square take on a holiday theme and the more and more bright lights add to the spirit-filled atmosphere of the season. The spectacular lighting displays in the medieval lanes and alleys show stars and Christmas motifs. Little ones can share in the magic of Christmas as storytellers take them to discover excitement, mystery and music at the Hall Advent Market.

Lienz Christmas Market

Deeply rooted in tradition, the Advent Market of Lienz is rated among the most beautiful markets of Austria and draws visitors with lovingly decorated stalls, holiday lights illuminating the entire town and open fires. On the main square in front of Town Hall, there are stalls stacked with fine handicrafts and other articles that make wonderful Christmas presents, and the air effervescent with scents of delectable foods and open fires. At the living workshop, little ones can watch skilled craftsmen and artisans who lovingly labour over elaborate items. Moreover, there’s Christmas cookie baking in the atmospheric Kids’ Bakery.
