Few places in the world mix skiing with lifestyle like Kitzbühel does. Not only is it home to the biggest event in Alpine skiing, it also offers some of the best shopping opportunities in the Tirol, along with incredible mountain experiences
Every October, when the first snow falls on the peaks above Pass Thurn, the resort of Kitzbühel whirs into action. In doing so, it becomes the first non-glacier ski area to open in all of Austria, cementing its legendary status among the ski resorts of the Alps. How does it manage it? Geography. Sat to the North West of the main alpine ridge, Kitzbühel’s mountains regularly boast eight feet of snow. Hire a guide and start exploring some of its freeride terrain, or head up to Kitzbüheler Horn for perfectly-groomed pistes and glorious views.
But a fantastic snow record is not all this iconic resort is known for. Every January, the very best ski racers in the world flock to this historic town to take part in the Hahnenkamm. The annual race sees athletes fly down the famous Streif downhill run in 120 seconds, cheered on by thousands of spectators. Try skiing it for yourself to experience a bit of ski racing history, Or, for a truly unforgettable experience, tandem paraglide from the top of it.
Away from the mountain spots like Highways Music Bar and Club Take Five offer seriously classy après-ski. In fact, with its colourful architecture, foodie culture and cosmopolitan shopping facilities, Kitzbühel is as well known for its vibrant lifestyle as it is for its mountain experiences.
