“The best times – both summer and winter – are when I can stay at home with my family in the evening and we are alone in the Schönwieshütte hut. You step out onto the terrace in the morning and there is absolute silence, not a soul to be seen. Just the sound of the snow settling. Those are the best moments.

I could have imagined doing a lot of different things with my life. After training as a chef and waiter I spent time in Australia and would have liked to have stayed in America. But when you have kids family becomes the most important thing and it’s good to have grandparents close by. These days I couldn’t imagine living any other way.

One of my dreams is to work as a ski instructor again one day, if my financial situation is good. That would be a nice job to do when I am retired – but of course I will have to wait a bit. When I see the ski instructors on the pistes they are all really fit and happy because they don’t stay at home but instead are on the slopes three days a week teaching people how to ski. I would like to do that myself later, but for now I am happy running my hut.”

Ferdinand Fiegl, Hut owner

When he’s not dreaming of working as a ski instructor, Ferndinand Fiegl enjoys running his own mountain hut, the Schönwieshütte in Obergurgl, and during the summer months another hut on the Timmelsjoch pass straddling the border between Austria and Italy. Guests are picked up personally by Ferdinand or a member of his team on a skidoo and transported, together with their skis, up to the Schönwieshütte hut, which is located a little off the beaten track away from the hustle and bustle of the ski pistes.
